House Prices: The Local Picture

Whilst stories abound about falling house prices nationally, it pays to look behind the headlines and see what is happening at the local level where you live.

In Bedfordshire for example, the average house now costs £211,880 and over the past year* represents an increase of 0.6%. And whilst house prices in the county have fallen in the last quarter, it is a fall of 0.5%, not the 10%+ headlines that are grabbing the attention.

Tony Rice, of specialist mortgage brokers TMP Mortgage Zone, said: "Many buyers and sellers have been put off by months of bad news headlines, but what the headlines don't tell you is what is happening in your local area. These latest figures from the Land Registry show that across Bedfordshire prices are remaining steady or only falling by less than 1%."

*figures and percentages quoted taken from the Land Registry of England and Wales and are for the latest 12 month period for which figures are available from 1 July 2007 to 30 June 2008
