The Top 10 Questions You Should Ask About Mortgages

The Government suggests that anyone considering taking out a mortgage should ask these 10 questions:

1. How much can I afford to borrow?

2. How can I tell which mortgage rate is best?

3. What is the best type of mortgage for me?

4. How should I repay it?

5. Can I make lump sum payments?

6. Are there any redemption penalties?

7. Does this mortgage come with insurance?

8. What other charges will I have to pay?

9. What happens if I can't pay?

10. What about the small print?

Tony Rice, of Bedfordshire-based specialist mortgage and insurance brokers TMP Mortgage Zone, said: "A mortgage is generally your biggest financial commitment so it makes sense to ask as many questions of your bank, building society, other lender or mortgage broker as you want until you feel comfortable you have all the answers you need to make an informed decision."

"TMP Mortgage Zone is committed to treating customers fairly so we always produce a Key Facts Document for every customer that clearly and simply provides user-friendly information to customers about the mortgage offer - including the total cost of the loan."
